Choosing the right size blanket is an important part of the buying process. The last thing you want is a blanket that keeps every part of you warm except your toes. You also don’t want a blanket that is so big it doesn’t fit on your bed. Unfortunately, you can’t typically “try on” a blanket before you buy it, so it’s important to know what measurements to look for that make the best size blanket for adults—and everyone else in the family.

You’ve had your eye on a cozy, minky blanket for a while now and you’re finally ready to buy. Can you trust that an adult minky blanket will be the right size for you, or do you need exact measurements?

What Do You Plan to Use Your Minky Blanket For?

The first thing to consider is what you will be using your minky blanket for most often. For example, are you looking for a blanket to cover your bed and sleep with every night? Or do you want one you can throw across the back of the couch that you can snuggle in while you read or watch a movie? Are you going to be using it alone or does it need to cover two people? The purpose of your blanket will help you determine the size you need.

Best Size Blanket for Adults

Whether you want your minky blanket to cover a queen- or a king-size bed, or be long enough for an extra tall person, you can use the measurements below to ensure you get what you need.

  • King-size blanket: A blanket designed for a king-size bed needs to be approximately 108 inches wide and 90 to 100 inches long.
  • Queen-size blanket: A blanket for a queen-size bed also needs to be 90 to 100 inches long, but only 90 inches wide.
  • Adult-size blanket: If you want to use your blanket somewhere other than your bed, the best size blanket for adults is 60 inches by 72 inches. (However, if you’re extra tall, you might be more comfortable with a longer blanket.)
  • Best Size Blanket for Children

Blankets for children don’t need to be nearly as big—unless they’re going to use them for epic fort building. Standard sizes for children’s blankets are listed below.

  • Twin-size blanket: A blanket for a twin-size bed should be 90 inches long and 66 inches wide.
  • Crib-size blanket: If you plan to use a minky blanket in a crib, choose one that is 60 inches by 45 inches.
  • Child-size blanket: If your child is looking for a blanket to use in other parts of the house, try one that is 33 inches by 57 inches.
  • Why Is Blanket Size So Important?

A blanket isn’t just something we throw on without thinking. Sometimes you choose a certain blanket because the color makes you feel calm or happy, but often it has more to do with the way it feels. You want to be warm, cozy, and comfortable. You may want to wrap up in it, cuddle with someone, or self-soothe with the softness of the fabric. For this to work, you need a blanket that is just the right size.

When we find that perfect blanket, it gives us freedom and space. We no longer have to keep seven different blankets for seven different purposes. We don’t need to cram endless amounts of blankets into the linen closet or keep decorative baskets full of them in every room with a TV.

Finally, we want it to look great. If we make our beds with our favorite blanket and it doesn’t cover the whole bed, or an excessive amount of fabric hangs over the edge, the bed looks sloppy. The best size blanket for adults is the one that fits.
